DIRECTORY - The table of contents for the files stored on a disk.
DISK - A circular plate of magnetically-coated material used to store computer
information.
HPs 3 l/2-inch flexible disk is enclosed in a plastic jacket.
DISK DRIVE - A device that allows a computer to read data that is stored on a
disk or write data on a disk.
EDITING KEYS - Any keys on the keyboard that can be used for updating
information on the screen by deleting, clearing and inserting characters.
Keys used for moving the cursor, rolling the screen and moving the display
pointer are also considered editing keys.
EXECUTE (EXEC) - A command that allows the operator to indicate when input on
the keyboard is finished.
FH FREQUENCY DATA - Frequency data that RT operates on during frequency
hopping; includes lockout sets and hopsets.
FILE - A part of memory or a storage medium that is uniquely identified by its
file name.
A file is treated by the operating system and application programs
as a separate unit of information that can be manipulated independently of
other files.
Files can contain data or programs or both.
FILE NAME - A sequence of 1 to 8 characters used to identify a particular
file.
FORMATTING - The process by which a disk is prepared to receive and store
data.
Also known as indicating.
First the disk drive checks the disk for
any damaged areas in which data cannot be stored. Second, the disk drive sets
up storage areas on the disk.
Finally, the disk drive sets up a directory on
the disk.
FREQUENCY ASSIGNMENT - A designated frequency for operation as assigned by the
net controller.
FUNCTION KEYS (also called SOFT KEYS) - The eight keys labeled fl through f8
on the top row of the keyboard.
Functions assigned to these keys often change
when a new screen is displayed.
Function-key labels appear in the right
blocks on the screen corresponds to the position of the function keys on the
keyboard.
HARDWARE - The physical parts of the computer system: the computer and the
peripheral devices.
HEAD - The part of the disk drive that reads data form your disk and writes
data onto your disk.
HOPSET - Data that determines which frequencies will be used during FH; used
by all radios in a net
